Long summers, hot weather, and a relaxed atmosphere: with thousands of tourists looking for a cool treat, Spain is an ideal market for ice cream manufacturers. FRIGO brand ice
cream made by UNILEVER FOODS España is the first choice for ice cream consumers young and old. In 1998, Spain's market leader produced 54 million litres of ice cream at its
facility in Barcelona.

In order to give the liquid mixture coming from the production facility time to solidify into ice cream, UNILEVER first enters the mixture into a freezing tunnel. After being
palletized it is stored in a Interroll flow storage system. The warehouse has space for 648 pallets including the 576 in the flow storage system. The pallets carrying ice cream
flow through the lanes based on the FIFO principle.
Cool calculations
The fresh ice cream cools down to -30°C as it runs through the flow storage lanes. Only then is it ready for delivery. With this compact flow storage technology, UNILEVER
requires only 4,500 m3 of space in Barcelona. This saves operating costs - particularly at a time when energy prices are exploding. The quick installation process also pays
off.

EURO pallets weighing up to 1,200 kg, are transported on three levels, each with 13 lanes and a capacity of 16 pallets per lane. Two safety separators per output position
guarantee maximum security despite the heavy weight. And to ensure that it is only the ice cream that freezes up, UNILEVER places the pallets on specially designed Interroll
conveyor rollers that are unaffected by the Arctic temperatures.
The installation is serviced by forklifts. Inherent in the design, the separation of the input and output faces shortens the travel distances and simplifies access to the
products. And at temperatures of 30°C below, this is an important advantage.
