 | The integration factor
The layout of the sorting systems in the Helsinki and Tampere postal centres is not at all conventional. Throughput can be increased to up to 20,000 items per hour, if required,
as two identical Interroll Crossbelt Sorters are arranged horizontally directly above each other.
The first section of the new plant in Helsinki became operational in June 2009 and once Itella had created adequate space by removing the old sorting plant, the sorters and
conveying equipment were installed in its place in the second phase. People are still impressed today by the commissioning of the sorter at the end of the second integration phase
with the belt running: "Several teams of experts from Siemens, the Finnish Postal Service and Interroll achieved a spectacular feat in several shifts over the weekend",
comments Thomas Bertran, Interroll Project Manager, reflecting on two hot autumn days in Finland in 2009. "The final act of the construction phase II was completed within 30 hours
in the Helsinki distribution centre and the entire system immediately went live."
The versatility factor
Parcels, large letters and bundles of newspapers, magazines and letters are sorted in Helsinki along two 523 metre-long stretches. This is a new Interroll record, as is the total
Crossbelt Sorter length of 2.4 kilometres in all four centres. Benefits in Helsinki and Tampere: Both sorting lines can serve one and the same end position at maximum speeds of up
to 1.7 metres per second. Large letters and bundles of newspapers, each weighing up to 15 kilograms, are sorted via automatic chutes directly into a roller container. Manual
chutes, which guide the parcels on heavy-duty roller conveyors for manual sorting, can be used to sort larger parcels with a maximum length of one metre and weighing up to 35
kilograms.
The product expertise factor
The individual destination layout in each of the postal centres is flanked by a functional, safe-operating and gentle track for supplying small to large items onto the sorter. 1.8
kilometres of conveyor technology is provided by Interroll Belt Conveyors, Belt Curves and Strip Belt Merges.
What our customers think
"The installation with the belt running at the end of the second construction phase in Helsinki impressed us, as does the efficiency of the Interroll Crossbelt Sorters. We attach
great importance to a simple, technically proven solution with minimal maintenance, particularly in terms of the total cost of ownership."
